Question

How to get more accurate distances from foot pod?

I am finding that the foot pod is not accurate at all!!! Is there anything I can do to make it accurate? I'm very disappointed in this as it also calculates inaccurately my speed and pace. This unit is brand new.

Hello

As far as I know, the M5 does not have a calibration option. The only choice I think is to change position of you foot pod to get more accurate data.

In order to ensure the POD produces accurate data, it should be calibrated. This is possible with the Quest, Ambit or t6d-devices.

Perform the calibration on an accurately measured distance, for instance, on a 400 meter running track.

To calibrate Suunto Foot POD Mini with Suunto Ambit:

1. Attach Suunto Foot POD Mini to your shoe. For more information, see Suunto Foot POD Mini Quick Guide.
2. Choose a custom mode (for example Running) in the start menu.
3. Start running at your usual pace. When you cross the starting line, press [Start Stop] to start the recording.
4. Run a distance of 800–1000 meters (about 0.500–0.700 miles) at your usual pace (for example two laps on a 400 meter track).
5. Press [Start Stop] when you reach the finish line to pause the recording.
6. Press [Back Lap] to stop recording. After stopping the exercise, save the log by pressing [Start Stop]. If you do not want to save the log, press [Light Lock].

Scroll with [Next] through summary views, until you reach the distance summary. Adjust the distance shown on the display to the actual distance you ran with [Start Stop] and [Light Lock]. Confirm with [Next].

7. Confirm the POD calibration by pressing [Start Stop]. Your Foot POD Mini has now been calibrated.

Question

Difference Between Foot POD Mini and Foot POD Black/Yellow/(Red)

I have the old style/larger foot pod red and wonder what the differences are between the new style mini and the older style? Is the mini more accurate, robust, or some other advantage, etc... or are the differences just size, cosmetic, colour? Is the mounting system on the mini easier to change shoes? Thanks.

The Foot POD Mini is smaller than the older Foot POD. Together with the Suunto Quest it measures running cadence. It also transmits ANT and ANT+ signals.

Does the foot pod calculate cadence for one foot or two?

When I pair the foot pod with my suunto quest it shows cadence after my runs. I was wondering if this is steps per minute for one foot or steps per minute for both?

The cadence showed by Foot POD Mini and the Suunto Quest means the amount of steps taken by one foot. In other words if you multiply the cadence with two, you will get the total amount of steps taken with two feet.

Question

Indoor Training

I want my AMBIT and Foot POD Mini to record data during my workouts when I use my elliptical trainer (CYBEX 630A) i.e. the total number strides and whatever additional data I can record above and beyond what the AMBIT can record on its own. But it appears that with the current software/hardware level this does not appear possible. Will the software/hardware ever be update to gather this type of information for those of us who train indoors as well as outdoors?

Thanks

Unfortunately the Suunto Foot POD Mini is not suitable for training on an elliptical machine since the POD calculates the distance and the speed from the step. On an elliptical trainer the foot doesn´t hit the ground so the calculations cannot be made.

The Foot POD Mini will show you also your running cadence with the Suunto Ambit. First you would need to pair the POD with the Ambit and choose to see cadence in the Ambit display during the exercise, this can be done in Movescount.

Question

Cadence/Steps on Foot POD for use in Ambit/Movescount Apps?

When displaying cadence while treadmill running or stairclimbing indoors, is this still measured in RPM? Or when using the foot POD for these will it just give a running tally of steps taken? I am attempting to write an app for the Ambit for indoor use, and I want to display steps taken as opposed to RPM or steps per minute. Any ideas or suggestions? I don't want to purchase a POD if it won't display the step total, or at least send that variable for use in my app.

Thanks

The Suunto Foot POD Mini used with the Suunto Ambit shows the cadence as a graph from the whole exercise in Movescount and also the maximum and the average cadence, and the average stride. Unfortunately Movescount doesn´t show the cadence by laps separately, it can only be seen from the graph.

Question

Foot Pod and Steps

I will try to be more clear in my question this time. I want to know if the foot pod tracks number of steps (times the foot hits the surface). I would assume it does since it is used to measure distance. My final goal is to create an ambit app for measuring an estimate of vertical cllimb on an indoor stair treadmill. To do this I need to take the number of steps and multiply it by the known height per step of the machine. If the footpod only shows steps per minute (cadence) then my idea may not work since I can't convert the rate to distance/total steps. From here it would open up more indoor climbing possibilities such as vertical speed etc. Hopefully this was more clear and I can receive more help.

Thanks

Hi,

In this case we kindly advise you to take out the battery from the Foot Pod and put it upside-down for a few seconds. After that you can re-insert it the usual way and try to re-pair both devices.

Question

Foot pod is accurate for a while, and then starts showing a pace twice as fast as what I'm actually doing (sometimes walking) How can this be fixed?

I'm pasting the link to a few moves:
1#. http://www.movescount.com/moves/move15940791
At the end of this move you can see the pace dramatically changed to a 3:13 mile. not sure why.
2#. http://www.movescount.com/moves/move15260546 #foot pod# vs

http://www.movescount.com/moves/move15260602 #gps speed pod#.
These links are for a 50k I ran. I'm not worried about the distance shown via gps, i'm concerned over the variance between the foot pod #43 miles# and the gps #28). For some reason, immediately after I stop or walk the foot pod starts registering 3:14 min/miles. This is impossible for me and comparing it to the gps at the same locations, you can see the issue. I know the huge difference for the foot pod is because it generated 30-40 minutes of data at 3 min/mile pace. This is my 3rd foot pod #it replaced a broken one). The other 2 did not have this problem. Please advise to a solution. I've calibrated several times.

Hello,

Please make sure that your Ambit automatically searches after the Foot POD Mini at the start of an exercise. You can adjust this in Movescount under "Gear" > "Ambit" >" Customization" > "[Preferred Sports Mode]" > "Advanced Settings" > "PODs to search" and make sure that "Foot POD" is active.

The Suunto Foot POD is compatible only with sports watches, including t3, t4 and t6 watches.

The Suunto Memory Belt can only be connected with the t3, t4, t6 watches, as well as with the Suunto Team POD and the watches in the Ambit family.
The Suunto Memory Belt only records (if used alone) or transmits (in connection with something else) heart rate data.

Question

What's the point of use the Foot Pod with Ambit

I use the Ambit GPS watch.
I have also the Foot POD mini (from my "old" T3d watch).
1- What is the interest of using the Foot Pod with the Ambit?
2- Does it use GPS or Foot Pod for speed and distance?
3- When you climb, how the Ambit measure the distance?
Between several GPS points? Or the Ambit analyse the GPS points + the altitude changing and deduced the true distance? (hypotenuse of a triangle have't the same length that the opposite face!)
Thanks
