Question

The black line on the back of the compass rotates freely. Isn't that supposed to stay in one place as I set the declination?

Set the angle of declination using the black line that projects from the bottom of the bearing arrow through the upside down V. It looks like this /|\

I learned this from the online manual I found here...

http://ns.suunto.com/Manuals/MC-2_Global/Userguides/Suunto_MC-2_Global_instructions_multi.pdf

With the MC-2 G compass, the declination correction is
done by turning the sprocket under the compass with the
adjusting key on the neck lanyard. Set the line in middle
of the black back part of the rotating directional arrow to
the desired place of the declination scale. The compass
now indicates the corrected bearing (which agrees with
the map coordinates). Always remember to check that
declination has been set correctly in accordance with
local conditions before using your compass.

The manual that came with my compass was generic to several Suunto compasses and made me have to scour the web to find the information I needed. A very poor first user experience for me.

The black line (well, arrow, actually) is used only for the inclinometer, so it should respond freely to the force of gravity. If you've never used the inclinometer, it's easy, and useful for estimating steepness of a slope. Here's the unofficial method which seems easy enough to figure out on the fly.

1) Hold the compass on the edge, and look through the back (see attached photo).
2) Rotate the bezel ring (NOT the base plate) until the red arrow points straight up.
3) Now match the angle of the compass baseplate edge to the angle of the slope (or whatever) and read the inclination in degrees using the black arrow and the red scale at the bottom of the compass. Note that the numbers read correctly from the back of the compass.

The black arrow is the clinometer indicator. It's supposed to move freely.

If you look at the pictures at:

http://www.suunto.com/global/en/products/Fieldcompasses/suunto-mc-2-global

there are a couple of ways to attach the lanyard to the compass. The "official" method uses that small, loose black plastic thing which is included in the package. With a moderate amount of force, the black plastic thing snaps into the compass base (at the end, immediately to the right of where "MC-2" is inked into the base plate). Then, with the black plastic thing in place, you hook the lanyard in and voila! You're done.

Sort of done, that is. This method provides two vulnerable failure points:
1) The black plastic thing can fail or come unsnapped.
2) The lanyard can come detached from the black plastic thing.

Method 2 is to simply loop the lanyard through the compass base at the same point where the black plastic thing is supposed to go. This attachment technique is used in three of the four photos in the link provided above, and it is very secure.

I just got my compass, and thus have not had a chance to see how well Method 2 works in the field, but this is what I'm using right now. The small black plastic thing will go in my drawer of "Parts I Don't Know What To Do With," and will likely stay there forever.

When you hover the mouse over the picture, you will see how the lanyard is attached under the clip.

Question

MC-2 G Serial Number

Which set of numbers from the manual is the serial number for the MC-2 Global compass?

Exactly how does the lanyard attach to the black plastic clip?

The manual is poorly written.

Look at the picture of the compass at the link below:

When you hover the mouse over the picture, you will see how the lanyard is attached under the clip.

Question

Is this compass Suunto MC-2g water proof?

Is this compass water resistant & water proof? If the compass was to go under water, will it ever work again? Also, if I was in the rain using the compass & it is getting wet will it still work?

It's water resistant for rain but always try and keep it as dry as possible. If you are going sailing and get salt water on it, please rinse it off with fresh water because the salt water may erode the markings on the mirror and the compass.

Dear Suunto

I buy Suunto MC-2 today and .... disappointed because there's no manual operation.

I tried to find in the web ... but there's only manual instruction ... not manual operation (how to use this product).

Could Suunto give some points of words in this web how to operate MC-2 compass?

Yes, that is correct. If you order the MC-2 in the USA you will receive it in imperial units. For the rest of the world, it will be delivered in metrics.

Question

Unable to spin the black ring with numbers on it to follow a bearing

I just got my Suunto MC-2 compass in July. I used it quite a bit for 6 weeks but now have not used it for roughly 8 weeks. I just went to use it and the black ring with the numbers on it will not spin at all. It is completely stuck and will only move with extreme force. Just wondering if there is something I can do to get my compass to work.

Thank you!
